Healthy Meal suggestions for Outback Steakhouse

I'm not much for reviewing chains because they all seem - as one friend described it - "boil-in-bag". Sure, there are higher-end chains and some have quality controls that are better than others. When it comes to occasions such as lunch with a group, these places fill an essential need. After all - it's not a hot date. It's a place to gather. There's something for everyone on the menu...it's familiar...and gets lunch done without burning too much time. Is it just me, or has the Outback chain declined significantly in recent years? I'm not trying to pick on this location. I've noticed this at another location within the last year or so. Overall, food quality is NON-existent. Tough steaks that, even if you do order medium-rare, require sawing and more chews per bite than a Nylabone would. You DEFINITELY need A-1 here, since this thing has basically no flavor. Salads that describe "fresh mixed greens" on the menu but come out with iceberg. That cute brown mini-loaf that used to taste so wonderful? Well, it looks the same, but leaves a strange funky bitter finish on the tongue these days. After a small bite, I'm not so disappointed now that only two of these mini loaves were left after all. Total weirdness: my whole meal came out nearly falling off of a tiny plate that is the size typically used for appetizers/tapas. (What the...?) Except for two other tables -- it was mostly empty and quiet at a prime dining time. At least I sort of like the song "Firework" by Katy Perry and sang along in my head as I stared up at the purple-painted drop ceiling. The inside decor looks exactly like it did in the 1990's when the chain was new, back when Friday nights (if everyone managed to coordinate with messages on cassette-based answer machines was successful) meant that you might have dinner at a place like Outback and after a few ridiculously sweet frozen cocktails - end up at the local club dancing the night away to Macarena. Even the menu has exactly the same items that I remember. I noticed ONE "NEW!" item: tacos. (Tacos? er, ok...that's random...) This particular location needs good deep cleaning. A close looks reveals food smudges and a funky musty odor that knocks your breath out when you first walk in. Again, it's not just this location - Outback seems like a shell of its former self.

Worse Outback Steakhouse ever! Sirloin, lobster tail and a full rack of baby back ribs were ordered. Food came out rather fast as if it was a return order from someone else. That should have been a big hint right there! Lobster tail was about the size of 1 large shrimp. Baby back ribs were burnt, dry, cold and covered with bbq sauce to hide it all. I don't understand how restaurants like this have the audacity to charge $20 for ribs that are supposedly cooked by professional chefs and winds up tasting like 2-day old leftovers! Unbelievable!

No. This is a review I really hate to write. I've typically had good experiences at Outback (not this particular one) in the past, but I feel the entire franchise is dwindling. The service was average, as other users have mentioned. The portions were very small for the price I was paying. Steak was requested medium and it was definitely well, the well steak was carpet. A nice blotch of potatoes for one side dish and 3 pieces of broccoli for another. This extended beyond one experience too. The only thing this place seems to do right are the Bloomin' Onions.

We always enjoy going to this Outback. It's our favorite restaurant near home.

Fail. Big fail. I usually get chicken dishes but was taking my meat eating family out for steak. Haven't been to an outback in years. Ordered a cocktail off their $4 cocktail list and was told it was happy hour. Husband ordered one also. Got charged $10 for mine and $6 for husbands. Then I ordered my teriyaki skewer medium well. It came to me red and bloody. I sent it back, and this time it came back a shade pinker. Sent it back a final time and it was so well it tasted like shoe leather. Considering I hadn't had a steak in years, and went to a place with steakhouse in the name this was pretty ridiculous. Manager comped my dish. Thanks, but I think I paid for it anyway with the drinks off your happy hour menu that came in full price. The only thing that saved this visit was that the server was great. Won't be back though.

What happened??? I used to really like Outback and always got a small fillet and it was a good steak. I ordered one on 2/9 and it was just awful. It wasn't tender, it was 1/3 the thickness that it used to be. It had some very tough marbling in the steak that was un-chewable. WalMart called, they want their trash meat back. I have had better steak from Costco! Additionally, I ordered a baked potato. It was last night's potato. I told the waiter and he got me a new one that was delicious. They tried to make it right at least, but what a waste of money.

Family dinner after the mountains! I'm a fan because Outback has good consistent quality and service. If there's a problem which there rarely is - they handle it. As a foodie I pretty much hate chains and seek local owned and family restaurants as much as possible. However, when I need to get my steak on at a value on the road or with family this one does it well. If anything, get there before 530 or you'll wait a little bit.

Full rack of baby back ribs for $17! Nice, mellow, bbq sauce. More meat than most ribs! They must have their ribs cut to order with way more meat on the bones, literally! The place was packed for a Thursday night dinner. Speedy, friendly, service, even if it was a bit abrupt. I hadn't been Outback in years, and I might be outback sooner than later.

We had a very small issue with our meal. The manager came over to apologize and really took care of us. He really WOW'd me and showed tremendous customer service! We are certainly going back!

Terrible food and service. I haven't had a dining experience this bad in years! I could have gotten over any of the issues individually, but not all at one time. My husband and I agree that we will NEVER visit this restaurant again. 1. Despite the fact that it wasn't crowded at lunch, the server was impatient and I felt rushed when ordering. 2. When we received our bread and butter, the butter had a hair in it. I apologized for bothering the waiter and pointed out the hair. He never brought any butter back. 3. My french onion soup was horrible. Canned french onion soup has less salt. There was bread on top with no cheese (arguably the best part of the soup). 4. The lettuce in our salads tasted like old bagged lettuce. 5. The coconut shrimp appetizer was not crispy. After taking a bite, the coconut breading would fall off the remaining part of the shrimp. 6. The cheese on my son's grilled cheese wasn't even melted and one side of the bread was completely white. 7. The server forgot to bring out the fruit to go with my son's sandwich. He didn't seem to care. 8. At one point the server brought my husband and I refills. We thanked him and he didn't even respond. Yeah...there wasn't one good thing about this visit.

Service stinks. Lets be honest, it's a corporate product that has one thing going for it: the bloomin' onion. The rest is so-so.

I was sitting at a table near the kitchen and was SHOCKED to hear a manager, I believe his name is Chris, swearing at one of the servers. That was extremely inappropriate to be doing that in earshot of customers.

My husband and I both ordered steaks med rare (like we always do). My steak was raw, extremely bloody and not even close to med rare. My husbands was a little better but still not med rare. We sent them back (which I have never done). When we got them back my husbands was perfect mine was still cold in the middle. The manager came out to see how the steaks were. I said mine was still on the rare side. He then gave me a talk that I don't know what med rare is and that I need to know what I am ordering next time. I couldn't believe it! We will never go back. It's one thing to not cook a steak right I get that but to be lectured on how I'm wrong and need to know what I'm ordering is humiliating.

Outback is one of my favorite chain restaurants. The food is fresh and I always seem to have a good experience. The service is usually great - it doesn't seem like the servers ever have too many tables. I always blame the restaurant for poor service when the servers are juggling way too many tables! I love the steak (especially the filet), the coconut shrimp is AWESOME, love the salads - the house salad has cucumber, tomato, cheese, red onion, delicious homemade croutons and awesome homemade dressing. The Caesar is awesome, and the blue cheese chopped salad is a treat! I love the green beans as a side - they are so tasty. Also, enjoy the king crab add-on - YUM!! All-in-all, this is one of the few chain restaurants that I happily frequent because the food and service are very reliable.

I'm done with Outback. Last night was the icing on the cake. I've been eating at Outback since about 1988/1989. I've always enjoyed the unhealthy, flavorful(salty, buttery)taste of their food. Since I started eating at the Highlands Ranch Outback, I've given much more thought to the overall experience. What really, really bothers me is how the portion sizes have changed and the prices have increased considerably. The "add a salad" to an entree has shrunk in size. The chicken and rib combo left me hungry last time I ordered it. I think the entree costs about $20.00+ but you only receive 1 slab of 5-7 ribs. A rack of 12 ribs is the way it should be. The baked potato I received last night with my chicken on the barbie was about half the size of previous baked potatoes I've ordered. The service is typically OK, but nowhere near perfect. The saving grace is the friendliness of the servers. The servers usually are really accommodating and outgoing. Back to the food, the amount of salt and butter the kitchen uses on a daily basis must be eye opening. I don't know how the FDA allows this company to get away with it. No joke. I rarely ever see a manager floating around while I'm dining at this location unless he's at the bar puttin' a few Bloakies back. In case you are wondering, this location is franchised or licensed to an individual owner. I'd be curious if other local Outback's are operated in a similar fashion to this location.

Worst experience with a steakhouse ever. Ordered a filet medium. It came out still blue in center. I had cut the steak down the center. I asked for a new steak. Instead they took the steak back on the grill and killed it. It demonstrated again why I usually won't order steak at a chain restaurant because the cook has no concept of how to cook. Steak needs to rest after cooking and throwing steak pieces on the grill just demonstrates a lack of caring combined with ignorance of how to prepare a good cut of meat. It makes me wonder who was on the grill because it was obvious the person cooking doesn't know what they are doing. I wouldn't go back here even if the paid me.

Okay, there is nothing unique about a chain steakhouse, but I love the two for one happy hour, and I always know what to expect. This place is a hit with suburban Denver, and crowded on a Friday afternoon happy hour.

The good: Clean restaurant Friendly and competent waiter Fresh vegetables served with the main dishes The fried onion special appetizer thing - not good for you, but it looked cool and was tasty, even a slightly bit spicy The quality of the ingredients used seems pretty decent for a chain restaurant The bad: Cheese on a regular house salad - why and why didn't the menu warn me so I could ask it to be removed? I'm lactose intolerant so this is more an just an annoying quibble Almost no dressing on the salad - made it bland The boring: Pretty much the entire menu: meat, veggies, maybe a potato, perhaps mac and cheese or a salad. ~snore~ Granted, this is not my type of food or restaurant so it isn't completely fair, but my overall assessment of this place is that it will fill you up and won't cause you gastric distress later, but the overall food experience is BORING enough to bring someone who enjoys a good meal to tears.

Each time I go to an Outback (mostly when I'm out of town on business, but a couple of times at this one closer to home) the food has actually been pretty darn tasty. And, for what you get, the price is right. For example, last night I had a steak and crab legs for $13.99. My steak was cooked correctly for the temperature I ordered. Everything was delicious, including the bread and baked potato. I'm also a HUGE fan of the wallaby darned (Outback's version of a bellini). So why only 3 stars? The atmosphere! This is definitely a family restaurant. So, if you have kids this is the place for you. It's been a long time since I've seen as many children and senior citizens at a restaurant! My aunt (a senior citizen) and I had the pleasure (said sarcastically) of sitting next to a table of 12 or so which included at least 6 small children, including 1 crying/yelping baby. That doesn't lend itself well to enjoying the dining experience, at least IMO. And, I also think the wait staff are a little too familiar. I really don't need my server to sit down next to me (on the booth portion of our combo booth/table) to take my order. And, he also touched my aunt's shoulder when he said he'd bring the check. (When I mentioned this she replied that in her "old age" people touch her more and call her sweetie. Yuck!) I'll likely be back, but it will be a while. Quite possibly a long while.

I haven't been to an Outback Steakhouse in years, and this type of poor service and abysmal cooking are the reasons why. The sad part of it is, is that it wasn't the server, it was the management and their complete lack of caring for a patron, when food was taking over 30 minutes and was brought out, one steak was overcooked well, when it was ordered medium, and mine which was so undercooked it was blue, when it was ordered medium rare. To top things off the manager made no attempt to rectify the situation other than excuses it all due to being short handed. It is reasons like this I will never step another foot in an Outback Steakhouse.

We decided to give this location another chance after our poor experience this past November. Back then we ordered our steaks well done and medium well done. Both steaks came out medium rare. This time we decided to be smart and order them medium. After waiting for almost 30 minutes we were served two very well done steaks. Both were dried out and had a lot of gristle. On the plus side, the Bloomin Onion was great as was our server. I guess this is just not the place to go to get a decent steak.

Wow. How do I start? First we waited an hour and a half, we did this only because we had a gift card, we weren't starving, and had other errands to run anyways. Additionally, it was pretty obvious that the high school girls and boy working the front made additional efforts to seat their friends and parents of their friends first. When we were finally seated we ordered drinks and the spinach artichoke dip, which was OK. Our waitress, however, was very nice and attentive. The best thing about our experience. Salad was OK, steak was cooked fine; however, the bathrooms and are surrounding the restroom area was DISGUSTING. On the floor in front of the women's bathroom was a string, if you know what I mean. GROSS. I will not be returning to this establishment, even if I am desperate. I would of rather had a mediocre steak with a clean and well maintained restaurant.

Now I'm not normally a fan of these types of places but was very impressed by this location. The staff was super friendly. Far friendlier than any outback staff I have ever been to. Hands down. The food [2 steaks cooked medium rare with extra seasoning] came out super fast. To the point of amazement. Everything was cooked perfect to which for some reason is a rare thing to find in most chain places. The waitresses was very on top of everything and amazingly nice. Will I be back? Yes I will.

My husband and I used to love this specific location but the last two times we went it was less than stellar. My Victoria filet was smashed "so it could cook better" but it was completely flat and burnt. Then I spilled my drink all over me and a waiter happened to be passing by and grabbed the glass but no one ever brought me anything to clean myself with not did they come clean the floor or table. Maybe new management? I don't think we'll be going back.

Groovy new menu at Outback Steakhouse. The "Straight From The Sea" selections are awsome, but I mainly visit for the tender flavorful steaks. Still prefer my beef cooked with the classic preparation over the newer wood-fired option though. Some new healthier choices on the menu too and a large gluten-free selection outback.com/menu/pdf/glu… "No Rules" at Outback right? Well watch out for the "Aussie-tizers" & desserts. They are packed with extra calories, fat, & sodium! The worst offenders are the Bloomin' Onion or Aussie Cheese Fries. We're talkin' like 2000 calories, 160g of fat, and 4000mg of sodium. These killers are meant to be shared by 6 people! Here's their nutritional calculator outback.com/menu/Nutriti… The decor at the Outback is dated, but it's been the same for years, and who really cares? The service is generally good. We go because we love the food and the price/value ratio is excellent. Avoid Friday & Saturday nights if you don't like to wait for a table.

I am not an Outback regular, but we wanted cow and we wanted it now. We started with an "Awesome Blossom". I have had them before and enjoyed them. but this one was a boat-payment for my cardiologist. The grease was dripping off it into a pool. The onion was not really cooked and the breading was overspiced. Oil too hot? Or oil too cold? The "two vegetables" were potatoes, potatoes or potatoes. And mixed vegetables or a salad. Ecch. My wife ordered the eight ounce medium, and I ordered the twelve ounce medium-rare. What came out was two identical cuts equally cooked. ??? My wife had to get her horseradish sauce from the manager when she made her rounds since our waitress forgot about us after serving. I would have liked to give it 2 1/2 stars but that is not an option.

Loved the Ribs! Last time, I had a steak and shrimp and these were also very good! The service was excellent, the restaurant clean and the food fresh and tasty! Since I eat lunch out often, I wish they were open for lunch every day but am happy that this location is now open for lunch on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Will be adding it to my "list" of regular places to eat.

I've always been a fan of Outback. I love the Bloomin' Onions and the chopped blue cheese salads. I was on business in Highlands Ranch recently and decided I was up for a good ribeye. I stopped in at Outback and ordered one. I must say, I was pretty disappointed. The ribeye was full of tough gristle, not flavorful marbling but just tough stuff. It wasn't very flavorful. The rest of my meal and service were great. I decided that maybe I just was served an off side of meat that night and decided to give it one more go. So, during that same five day business trip I decided to go try another ribeye. Unfortunately, the experience was the exact same. The ribeye was just not very good. I normally eat at Texas Roadhouse chain steak houses near my own home and always seem to get great ribeye. For some reason this Outback in Highlands Ranch just didn't seem to be up to par with the steak quality. My service was superb, and my favorite sides were delicious. But if a steakhouse can't serve up a good steak it leaves something to be desired.

I ate hear last Saturday night. The only things I liked was the service and the salad. I had the prime rib and the crab cakes. The crab cakes were salty and the prime rib was not medium rare; it was very rare to raw. It was sinewy and fatty. The baked potato was small. I wonder where they got it. My friend had a small sirloin. It was cooked right but she said it was too dry.

Always a good meal. Although they are known for their steaks, I'm hooked on their Alice Springs Chicken!

Well I think this is last lest time I going here. The Chopped Salad: was screwed up twice in the past three month. :-( My Rib Eye ...not even a Rib Eye...on top of it not even cooked to what I requested. I do not know if they are purposely passing off cheaper steaks on the unsuspecting patrons. Yet this Steak swap now three time in 6 months Very SAD :-(( . Otherwise... management needs to have a better pass for quality control so this would never happen. Anyways Good Bye.

Sometimes a bit pricey but wife loves the shrimp on the barbie. The manager at this location goes above and beyond to ensure your satisfaction. Would recommend.

Wow! I have been frequenting this restaurant pretty regularly again, and this visit was one to remember. The steak I had was the *best* one I have had here so far. The seasoning was perfect, nicely cooked on the outside and oh-so-juicy, and cooked just the way I love it on the inside. In general, the customer service here is top notch! If your steak isn't the way you like it, they absolutely will fix it so you leave a satisfied customer. I am always impressed with how much they really care. James A was our awesome server. Great conversationalist, very helpful, and so on top of everything. I came in with a so-so level of excitement and left with an amazingly wahooooo, big smile. We will continue to visit here and suggest you give them a try out too, if you haven't yet!

I have always found this location to be consistent in the service and quality. I like Outback because I know what to expect everytime. I usually get the sirloin special or filet special with the house salad and loaded baked potato. For a chain restaurant, the have great steaks and they won't cost you an arm and a leg. They also have good specials throughout the year such as pairings with snow crab, lobster tail, and shrimp. This place can get pretty crowded on weekend evenings so I have found it you go between 5-6 you can usually get seated within a reasonable time.

    (4)
  • Samantha E.

There's nothing too outstanding about this Outback, but reliable reasonably-priced steak is "A-OK." On our first visit to this location, neither of our steaks hit the right temperature-- my husband's medium rare was still really red, and my medium didn't have very much pink. And they forgot the pecans on both of our chopped salads. We got takeout last weekend though, and it was great-- everything was perfectly cooked, my coconut shrimp were delicious, and the curbside to-go system was shockingly easy. Outback isn't competing with Elway's or anything, but it's tasty enough and the price is right, so I'll be back.
